Step By Step Diary of our Second Litter 2009

1st May, 2009

Lily watching the world go by outside the back door.

We have been waiting in anticipation for Lily's season, due in May and like clockwork it started today, lst May 2009.  We are intending to mate her this time round, she is now 3 years and 2 months and it is 14 months since her last litter.  She has had a good year and has been both fit and well, recovering quickly after her first litter.  It took a while for her coat to come back and she looked really straggly for a good few months,  I began hand stripping her and with regular grooming and lots of TLC she has a really good quality, thick coat now.  She also needed to recoup her weight as the puppies really took all her reserves and she did go quite thin but she has been on top form for the last six months, gained all her weight and some extra, she is a really lovely size quite stocky but definitely not fat. she is eating well and getting lots of regular exercise and we think ready now to be a Mum again.  Hopefully the mating/s should take place any time from 11th May, so watch this space................................

The eleventh day passed us by and the 13th and then the 14th and Zak showed no interest in Lily at all and I was beginning to wonder if something was wrong.  Zak had known instinctively the 'right' time during both Lily and Belle's previous seasons and I trusted that if she had released her eggs he would know about it so I felt that the problem may be that Lily was not ovulating. On Friday I gave up, this being the 15th day and left all three dogs in the kitchen together when I went out to work.  Low and behold 'BINGO' I got in from work to find Zak's hormones had kicked in at last and we spent the next three days supervising the two of them.  They successfully mated three times over the three days with approx 20 minute ties each time.  Now its fingers crossed that our next litter should be due on Friday 17th July, 2009

Saturday 6th June, 2009

Lily is now 22 days into her pregnancy, she has put on weight and looks quite 'round' around the ribs which is in keeping with all the research I have read.  She is also following the same pattern as last time.  As the puppies grow larger this plumpness will move down into her lower abdomen.  She is eating well and has been sick just a couple of times.  I have introduced some extra nutrition into her diet, eggs and a little dairy.  I have begun preparing myself by making a list of what I will need for her whelping kit and ordering some of the essentials that I needed to replace from when she had her last litter.

I have decided to become a KC accredited breeder and have now got the necessary forms to complete for this.

We took all three westies away on holiday with us for a week during half term and they enjoyed their twice a day jaunts into the forests near where we stayed in Poole, Dorset.  Much to my dismay, Lily picked up two ticks whilst we were there, one on her tummy and one on her eyelid.  All the dogs have been frontlined so I was very concerned but I neednt have been, the ticks did not grow although they did embed into her skin and they were easily removed with some fine tweezers.  She is absolutely fine now with no ill effects.  Thank Goodness....

Lily relaxing at home trying to get comfortable with her big tummy

Picture
My little Lily has spread out very rapidly over the last week and has become rather lazy.  She had a trim up last weekend as the weather turned warmer and she appeared to be uncomfortable.  I stripped out some of her coat and trimmed her furnishings to try and make her a little more comfortable.  Her tummy seems huge and she has developed a waddle.  Belle has become quite protective of her which is quite strange.  Zak, takes no notice and takes it all in his stride.  Her diet has increased and I have began to add lots of extras, ie. eggs, scrambled and boiled, cottage cheese, also cod liver oil.  This week she will be due to start her course of wormer and also a supplement of raspberry leaf tablets to help with her milk production.  I tried to slowly add some skimmed goats milk but this seemed to upset her tummy so at the moment she is just drinking water and having the occasional teaspoon of natural yoghurt.

She knows she is special at the moment and I think she is enjoying all the extra fuss.  We are all getting quite excited as she is in her sixth week and as a family we are beginning to plan everything around her giving birth.  Lily's whelping kit is almost complete now, I am just waiting for a couple more items to arrive.  I have drawn up my puppy contracts this week to comply with the accredited breeder scheme and also printed off my puppy information leaflets and generally been trying to get all my paperwork in order ready so that I dont have to worry about doing this once the puppies are born.  We will start to devise a list of pedigree names soon, not sure whether to have a theme this time, or not. Please feel free to email me with any ideas.

Lily seems to be growing bigger each day.  How many puppies can she possible have in there.  Her head seems so small compared to the rest of her body, well out of proportion.

We have made Lily a new smaller whelping box this weekend.  Hopefully this will make her more comfortable for the first couple of weeks.  We decided on a 24" X 30" box with guard rails along three side.  This is so that the pups have somewhere safe to roll under to prevent Lily laying on them.  The front end slots in at two heights so that Lily can get in and out easily to start with and then once the puppies start moving around we can leave it in place to prevent escapees.  We plan to transfer the pups to a bigger box once they need more space to explore.  Once we had finished making the box, I cleaned it first with antibacterial spray and then put her bed inside so that she can get used to it.

I also tried Lily on some puppy formula milk this weekend and she had no problems digesting this so I will add about 100ml a day to her diet, probably as a cool refreshing drink.   Belle and Zak looked on enviously as she savoured her milk today.

4th July, 2009

Lily is now 50 days into her pregnancy.  She is still doing really well, coping with the heat of the last few days.  She is quite lazy and will find a spot outside in the sun and move round with it as the day goes on.  We keep nagging her to move into the shade, but it falls on deaf ears and she just moves back out to her little spot again. With about 10-14 days left to go, the puppies are moving around and can be felt with a gentle hand placed on her tummy.  We are all getting very excited and waiting in anticipation for her  big day.

LILY'S Big Day.

15th July, 2009

Well what an eventful couple of days and nights I have had.  Lily started whelping at just after 10pm on Tuesday night.  She was panting heavily  and very unsettled.  I ended up sitting downstairs in the kitchen with her and she did manage to go off to sleep for a short while but at 2.30am 'ish' she was panting and digging about in her whelping box.  This went on all night long and although no other signs I knew we were in for the duration.  The only thing that threw me a little was that she ate a really good breakfast and that is according to the 'People that Know'  a sign that whelping is not taking place.  Ah! well cant always be right, can they.

The hours went by, lunch time came and went and she was still panting heavily, unsettled, digging around and had now begun licking everything, including me.  I decided to give her some lunch as there were no signs anything was happening imminently and she gobbled down some chopped chicken and puppy milk, no problem.

Then things started to move rather rapidly, I noticed she had begun having small contractions at about 1.10pm and just prior to this she had also begun to push her back legs out as if stretching, pushing against the side of the whelping box.  I, very coolly and calmy, looking back now I am not quite sure how I did this,   talked to her and stroked her back and tummy to try and reassure her.  The first puppy a boy arrived at 1.55pm weighing 209g, the second a little woppa at 2.25pm weighing in at a huge 233g, another boy at 3.15pm - 220g, fourth was another boy born very quickly at 3.30pm, weighing 205g and then a whole hour went by and she then had the little girl who weighed 215g.  This litter was considerably weightier than the last one, no wonder she had looked so big, poor little girl.

She actually caught me out between the fourth and fifth puppy because after half an hour had gone by I thought four pups was going to be the total and decided to try and clean her and the whelping box up a little bit, this time round everything including me seemed to get very messy.  I replaced her bed with a fresh vetbed, wiped clean the surfaces, put in the heat pad etc. trying to make her more comfortable then loe and behold out comes the last puppy.   Because of the delay in the last puppy I wasnt sure if the whelping had finished or not.

Lily knew exactly what to do with the puppies, she cleaned them continuously and is being an excellent Mum.  We got through our first night together, me on a camp bed in the kitchen, next to her whelping box.  She continued to pant overnight and I was not entirely convinced that she might not have another puppy during the night but all was fine and no more arrived although I hardly slept again, two nights in a row is not good for me, I feel like my head and body are not joined together today but wouldnt swap anything for the world.

The puppies are doing well and have had their weigh-in already today and all have gained weight so thats great news, their feeding is going well.  Lily had an early breakfast of scrambled egg, ham and an all in one puppy biscuit and two smaller snacks of beef mince, gravy and mixer.  She is doing really well and very much a proud Mum.

Couldnt forget to mention the proud Dad and Sister, they had to be in on the act yesterday and spent most of the time with me next to the whelping box and near to Lily until she actually started to give birth and then they both panicked a bit and because I didnt want Lily to get stressed I moved them the other side of the baby gate and into the hall which they seemed happier about.  They could see what was going on but from a distance.  They are a little curious as to what is in the box but Lily just gives them one of her looks and they are giving it a wide berth at the moment.

Thursday 16th July

Our first morning, Lily is still very messy and in need of a sponge down but I dont think she is that bothered and the puppies are buried inside her fur somewhere so they dont really care either, they probably think she smells lovely but thats not what I say!! although I think we'll forgive her this once

Lily, our clever girl, having a well earned rest

Picture
After a very hectic weekend, the puppies are now 5 days old.  They are gaining weight nicely and are over l00g heavier than their birth weight which is really good news.  They are getting so big in fact that we have had to remove their rails from the whelping box as they keep getting stuck underneath and end up with their little fat bodies trapped.  Hence the little holes which are visible in the photos.  They are getting their black pigment and their paws and noses are turning dark.

I have also had to change their collars as they were getting tight.  Lily is looking after them well and guards their box when she's not in it  which at the moment isnt often.  I think she has taken over the kitchen and Belle and Zak tip toe around her, if she lets them.

She is on three meals a day and also has a snack at l0.00.   Her breakfast is normally an all in one puppy biscuit with chopped chicken/ham and cottage cheese.  Then she has a small snack of mince and gravy with mixer.  Lunch is normally chicken, rice and vegetables and then dinner is beef, turkey or pork mince with rice/pasta/mixer, vegetables and gravy.  I think she is eating better than us at the moment.  In between she may have a little natural yoghurt and is enjoying drinking the puppy formula milk which is keeping her calcium levels up.  She finished her wormer on day two so no more of that nasty stuff for a couple of weeks but she still has two more days of raspberry leaf tablets, much to her disgust.

She has got her figure back really quickly considering she was so big this time and almost looks like her old self again.

I registered the puppy's names with the kennel club yesterday and await an email back from them confirming that we got our first choice.

Saturday 25th July

The puppies are now ten days old and growing and changing every day.  They move around all the time and make several different noises, one which is like a kind of 'barking'' and one which is almost purring', I think there may be some confusion somewhere.  They sometimes appear to be dreaming although they still have their eyes closed.  I have spent the first 8 nights on a camp bed sleeping with them in the kitchen just to make sure everything was ok at night and that Lily didn't squash any of them.  But all was well and thankfully I have now had two lovely nights sleep back in my own bed, BLISS!!.

They are all gaining weight daily and at the last weight in, yesterday afternoon, their weights were as follow:

Orange 516g  -  Turquoise - 563g  -  Lilac - 516g  -  Blue - 480g  -  Pink 476g

I now have confirmation of their kennel names and these will be:

JACKINASPIN CARLISLE
JACKINASPIN NEW MOON
JACKINASPIN EMMETT
JACKINASPIN ECLIPSE
JACKINASPIN ISABELLA SWAN

They are in a really good routine for feeding and Lily tends to spend several hours in the whelping box with them, feeding and cleaning, we say she is doing her 'housework'.  She then gives them some space and lays just outside the box guarding them, sometimes venturing outside into the garden where she may lay in the sunshine for a while and continues to guard the back door.  She has also developed a strange high pitched bark which she does if anyone walks past our garden fence.  She can be seen running up and down and barking almost telling everyone 'Dont you come too near I've got babies in there'  Although she allows me to be very 'hands on' with her and the pups, she is very protective over her puppies this time with both Belle and Zak and she still wont let them anywhere near the whelping box.  They are quite resigned to the fact that they mustn't go near and just ignore the box now when they are in the kitchen.  They have been so very good too and are little stars really, giving Lily all the space she needs to do her 'Mumsy thing' the way she wants to.

I would now like to introduce you to

JACKINASPIN ISABELLA SWAN
(Pet name - Maisie)

Nickname - Maisie
Aged 10 days old and weighing in at a grand old 476gms

.

I am expecting the puppies to open their eyes around day 14 although the little turquoise boy whom we have nicknamed 'Piggy' is very advanced, weighing in as the heaviest of the litter and being born with all his black pigment so may open his eyes sooner.  They will also be due their first dose of wormer at day 14, YUCK!! and also their first spray with Frontline, that will be a really nice treat for them on 29th July.

Some new photos taken over the last couple of days

This is especially for my four prospective families, cant wait to meet you all in just over two weeks time.  Hope you like the video.

Wednesday 29th July, 2009

Well the latest update on our new puppies is that today was a very exciting day, the first puppy opened his eyes and took his first look at the big wide world.  Today is also the day that they have their first taste of wormer and their first dose of Frontline Spray.  They will also all be having a manicure this evening as their nails are once again very sharp.

They are extremely mobile considering most of them still have their eyes closed and feeding has been going well and all have trebled their birthweight.  They continue to  sleep on and off throughout the day with periods of wakefulness where they move around and crawl all over each other.  I actually went out for two hours and left Lily behind to babysit on her own this afternoon.  "She is a very good and capable Mum and everything will be fine!" I tried to convince myself and even though I didnt believe myself,  all was well when I returned.

I had the pedigree registrations back from the kennel club in the post this morning and was disappointed to see that they have given me two of my second choices so we now have Jackinaspin Carlisle and Jackinaspin Emmett instead of my two first choices but luckily the names had not been chosen by their new families yet so it doesnt matter too much.

Lily is enjoying four meals a day and is generally very well and running around the garden in between looking after her babies, she also still has a good bark everytime someone walks past the fence.   As the puppies are growing rapidly she tends to go in the whelping box to feed and clean them and spends the rest of her time just outside in her comfy bed, keeping watch.

My what a difference it makes now that the last puppy has their eyes open.  They have instantly come alive.  They even appear to be playing with each other.  They have their 2nd dose of wormer today, not that they thought much of it yesterday.  I have placed some very basic cat toys in the whelping box just to make life more interesting and to get them using their senses.  Check out their latest video taken this morning I think they like their new toys.

Tuesday 4th August, 2009

The puppies are now very much wide awake, spending time feeding and playfighting with each other then crashing out again for a couple of hours.  They are weighing in at a hefty 955g, 898g, 882g, 868g, and Dinky is still the smallest at 823g.

Tomorrow will be their manicure, nail trimming day and also they will have their first grooming session.  I am going to give them a gently brush and try trimming their bottoms, eyes, and feet.

They have had their first taste of puppy formula milk ready for weaning, this will continue for a few more days and then I will try them with some very runny baby rice.

They are all very responsive to my voice and love to play with my fingers and hands.  They hear familiar household noises daily and are used to the washing machine, hoover, dishwasher, radio and take no notice of any of these noises.  We introduced Belle to three of the puppies today and she was not sure quite what to do and although she was very interested and watched them intently she gave them a very wide birth under the watchful eye of her Mum, Lily.

The puppies have begun moving off their vet bed and onto the paper to wee so I am forever changing their paper now,  Lily still cleans them but most of their wees are on the paper which is the start of their paper training.

One of them also did a poo on the paper this morning and needless to say the others all had a roll in the poo and needed a clean up session.  What have I let myself in for I say!!

The puppies are well on the move now, and have spent time out of their whelping box exploring the rest of the house.  They have met both Belle and Zak and are not in the least bit phased although both Belle and Zak dont quite know what to make of them and as soon as they move towards them, both of them back away not quite sure what to do.  The puppies love to spend time in Lily's bed which is right next to their box and cuddle up in her blanket and cushion.  They are all getting very vocal, and when they are awake it gets quite noisy in our house.  They have a little yap, not quite a bark yet and also do a little bit of puppy growling at each other when they are playing.

They are lapping up puppy milk really easily now and have a taster each morning and last night had their first taste of puppy milk and baby rice which they all devoured and were quiet as mice all night.

Lily still spends lots of time, feeding and washing them but she comes and goes now rather than spending all her time with the puppies.  She has also given up with cleaning up their no. 2's and I think that has become my job which is normal now they are having a little variation in their diet.

Lily had a good grooming session yesterday, I think I maybe took a little too much coat out but it was much needed and I stripped out lots of her dead topcoat and soft undercoat. She was looking very tatty and although not perfect looks much neater and will certainly be a lot cooler in this hot humid weather.
